Peek Inside a Busy Makers Book
Real activities, real simple. This is one of the kids' favourites from the Preschool Science & Discovery book.

What you need
- Tall glass or plastic cup
- Baking soda (2 tablespoons)
- White vinegar or lemon juice
- Food coloring (red or orange)
- Small tray or baking dish (to catch overflow)
- Spoon
What to do
Place the cup in the middle of a tray. Help your child spoon two big tablespoons of baking soda into the bottom of the cup. Let them add a few drops of red or orange food coloring on top of the baking soda.
Now the fun part — let your child slowly pour vinegar or lemon juice into the cup. The mixture will instantly fizz, foam, and overflow like a mini volcano erupting! The colored foam spills over the sides and fills the tray.
Once the eruption slows down, add more vinegar or lemon juice to make it go again. Try mixing red and yellow food coloring for a lava-orange color. Ask your child: what happens if we use more baking soda? Let them experiment and erupt it as many times as they want!
